Ancient India: Living Traditions

The British Museum

London

Open: May 22, 2025

Close: Oct 19, 2025

This exhibition explored the origins of the three major religions in India: Jain, Buddhism & Hinduism, as well as nature spirits and their influence on art beyond India. The exhibition featured more than 180 objects - including sculptures, paintings, drawings and manuscripts. The content and narrative were developed in collaboration with an advisory community panel of practising Hindus, Buddhists and Jains.

As a setting for the exquisite objects, a magical atmosphere was created, using candle light effects, intricate gobo patterns, bold colours, incense scents and mystical sounds.  A series of plinths positioned centrally within each section were adorned with glowing lotus patterns. Rays of golden threads were targeted onto key objects on top of the plinths, as if rays of light pouring into a darkened temple. The exhibition was divided by organza drapes that swayed gently and shimmered under pockets of light.
