Jurassic Oceans, Monsters of the Deep
Natural History Museum
London
Journeying beneath the surface of prehistoric oceans, where fearsome reptiles rule, the exhibition shines a spotlight on gigantic dinosaur predators such as the pliosaur, ichthyosaur, and the infamous mosasaur (to name a few). The immersive exhibition is the final stop on its world tour and features a unique collection of rare fossils and spectacularly preserved skeletons, gathered from the oceans all around the world.
The lighting design takes the visitor on a meandering journey, from harmless shorelines to ocean forests down to the deep dark seabed, using a generous splash of visual effects: including water fx projected light & dynamic shadows to create an effect of dinosaurs looming above you. Integrated showcase lighting with dynamic lighting effects creates a slow reveal, highlighting the form and beauty of the specimens. The surrounding atmosphere was enhanced by soft pools corals, greens, teals and marine blues, helping to bring the listed (aptly named) Waterhouse gallery to life. A series of tall back-lit illustrations punctuated the space to aid with way finding and background context. Embosser stands with integrated cool white light served as fun pit-stops for stamp collections of the various dinosaur species.
