In Other Worlds - Liam Young
Barbican Centre
London
Liam Young is a filmmaker and speculative architect based in LA. He invites us to imagine a future version for our planet, where humanity learns to heal the earth by dismantling our ever-destructive urban sprawl into one mega-city. In Other Worlds peers into a series of imagined futures, influenced by real science backed data, technology, and climate-based possibilities. Through a captivating immersive experience, a series of films, audio stories, models and costumes help to set the scene. This is the first exhibition of a UK-wide tour.
The lighting design brief was initially to support and compliment the largely film-based media, highlighting detail in the exquisitely intricate models & costumes. A secondary layer of light was introduced to breathe life to the geological rock formations cave-like walls with cool pockets of light. The seating boulders were bathed in splashes of amber coloured light, mimicking a neolithic alignment of a sacred sun path. Planet City Forest is a lighting feature within itself, designed to echo the pink/purple sky-glow from a modern urban farm using a series of suspended LED tubes hanging from the real tree-trunk forest.
