Medieval Women: In Their Own Words
The British Library
London, UK

The Medieval Women: In Their Own Words exhibition at the British Library offers a profound exploration of women’s stories from the Middle Ages, told through their own voices. This remarkable exhibition brings together a variety of artefacts and texts, shedding light on the overlooked contributions of women during a time when their voices were often silenced. Through illuminated manuscripts and written accounts, the exhibition reveals the agency, intellect, and resilience of medieval women.
Lighting played a crucial role in enhancing the exhibition’s emotional impact. Each display was thoughtfully illuminated to evoke reverence for the figures represented. One key design feature was the use of printed silhouettes of medieval women on translucent fabric. Strategically placed lighting created soft shadows, bringing depth to these ethereal figures, making them appear almost ghostly in their delicate form. As visitors moved through the space, projections subtly altered the figures’ appearance, reflecting the changing roles and perceptions of women throughout history.
The final scene culminated in a powerful crescendo of light and sound, highlighting the women’s stories. The lighting design created a dynamic, immersive experience that emphasised the exhibition's themes of resilience and strength. It seamlessly integrated with projections and sound, allowing visitors to feel the significance of these voices, making Medieval Women: In Their Own Words a moving tribute to these long-forgotten figures.
