The new Station Hall refurbishment formed part of a museum-wide renovation across the site. As part of the project, the roof was removed and completely replaced, allowing a limited daylight scheme to protect the period vehicles and objects. The project included a new graphic scheme and a new layout of the vehicles & objects. In addition, a large scale projection of a film documenting everyday passengers created a ‘pause point’ within the enormous hall.
The lighting was completely redeveloped from a largely obsolete theatrical/tungsten system using inefficient luminaires, to a track & spotlight system. The upgraded lighting scheme brought a new lease of life to the enormous space, highlighting the objects and the fascinating architecture of the original working station hall. One of the highlights of the exhibition is an original W H Smith kiosk dating back to over 100 years.
